Description: This two and a half-day workshop will introduce participants to basic hand papermaking techniques, and also welcomes experienced papermakers to class at Asheville Bookworks. Fully equipped with a Hollander beater, moulds and deckles, as well as a hydraulic press and other professional equipment, students will learn pulp preparation and sheet formation. Additionally, each student will have the option to experiment with several paper fibers to make beautiful and unique sheets.

The Friday evening session will include an introduction to hand papermaking, the process and equipment. Students will learn to prep fibers for beating, become familiar with the Hollander beater and its basic operation, as well as watch demonstrations in sheet pulling and other options for adding fibers and personalizing handmade papers. The following two days, students will begin to pull sheets with various fibers, colors and shapes by customizing deckles, and embedding additional fibers or other materials for collage elements. Participants will leave this workshop with several dozen sheets of handmade paper to be drawn, printed or painted on, used in collage or for projects in handmade books.

Students should bring to the class: plastic aprons, comfortable shoes that can handle water/wet areas, comfortable clothing that can get wet.
