Description: Come experience the dynamic combination of natural dye on paper + bookmaking. We will achieve a range of color on cotton paper using every-day dye sources, such as avocado, onion skins, hibiscus, and rosemary. We will also create ink from our natural dyes, and explore watercolor techniques to creative compositions. Finally, we will gather the dyed pages with linen thread to create two simple book structures: pamphlet stitch and hardcover Japanese stab binding. These handmade books can be starting points for drawing or creative writing, but can also stand on their own as a work of art.

Students should bring to the class:

  • medium duty awl (such as Lineco)
  • Bone folder (such as Lineco)
  • 100% cotton paper of your choice (we will tear sheets down in class)
  • linen bookbinding thread, 38 gauge, 3 ply thickness (such as Lineco)
  • wax for thread
  • bookbinding needle
  • PVA glue
  • foam brush
  • metal 18-24 inch ruler
  • exacto knife + blades
  • brayer
  • (optional) dyestuff
