Description: The myriad of unique structures invented by Hedi Kyle have had an enormous impact on
the field of book arts. Artists far and wide have been inspired and influenced by her
masterful paper engineering and particular genius for transforming the architecture and
action of the book. This workshop will cover Hedi’s ziggurat book, piano hinge book,
storage book, and other inventions as time allows.

We will use a variety of materials and papers, and each student will produce a collection of
books that can be used as reference and inspiration for further projects. Students will have
the opportunity to include and display their own small paper keepsakes, especially doublesided
items, in the storage book or conservation album that they create. The books covered
in this class will provide a sampler of alternative binding options, focused on folding rather
than sewing, and suited to creative and unusual content.

Students should bring to the class:

  • bone folder
  • x-acto knife
  • glue brush
  • metal ruler
  • scissors
  • pencil
  • awl
  • cutting mat
  • decorative, patterned, and/or handmade papers, both lightweight and heavyweight
  • plastic container, shoebox size or larger (optional)
