Asheville Bookworks will be hosting a book release party on Friday, March 14, 6:00 pm-9:00 pm for Brandon Mise’s new book, Adventures in Letterpress (Laurence King Publishing). The free event will feature a book signing and an exhibit of works featured in the book.
Adventures in Letterpress features over 200 images of letterpress from 80 studios around the world, including work from Asheville letterpress studios: Handcranked Letterpress, Flatbed Splendor, Mink, Jessica White, and Asheville BookWorks.
Brandon Mise’s letterpress company, Blue Barnhouse, was in West Asheville from 2005-2011 where they printed their letterpress greeting cards and became a neighborhood favorite for finding stationery from a wide variety of letterpress printers from around the US.
At the event the new book will be for sale, as well Blue Barnhouse’s entire line of greeting cards. Guests will be able to participate in the printing of a limited edition Adventures in Letterpress poster.
Tactile, retro, and idiosyncratic, hand-printed objects have an undeniable appeal, especially in a digital age. In recent years, the nearly obsolete craft of letterpress has been resurrected by artists and designers who have rescued cast-iron presses from basements and scrap yards. Adventures in Letterpressfeatures over 200 examples of the resulting work: elegant cards, edgy broadsheets, and everything in between. Beautiful, humorous and sometimes just plain weird, the projects featured in the book perfectly illustrate the vibrant future of this once-endangered medium.
Brandon Mise has been doing letterpress printing since 2000. He is the owner and operator of Blue Barnhouse, a letterpress greeting card company in Wilmington, North Carolina.
