Description: Students will study design and construction of custom boxes to hold precious books. Custom containers not only protect and preserve your special books but may be designed to complement the book held within. Two approaches to making a traycase or clamshell box will be presented. The first uses a built-up tray with sides glued to the tray bottom, the whole is then covered in cloth. This version is especially applicable for larger objects, with sides of double thickness making it much sturdier. In the second version the sides of the tray are fabricated separately from the tray bottom. It is much faster to complete and yet still provides adequate protection. The instructor will also demonstrate a cigar box version which does not have a drop front but a lid on top.

Students may choose to produce a box for an existing book up to 7” x 10” (depth is not crucial).

Students should bring to the class:

  • ruler
  • cutting mat
  • small metal square
  • scissors
  • scalpel (#23 blade is best) – If you have it
  • snap off blade tool
  • bone folder and/or teflon folder
  • ½” flat brush
  • 1” round brush
  • decorative papers, bookcloth for more personalized covering material

Some supplies for the class may be purchased online at Talasonline.com (Brooklyn-based supplier of binding tools and materials) or Hollanders.com in Michigan.
