April 5 – May 17, 2017
7 consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6 – 9 pm
Instructor: Sebastian Matthews
Description: Art of Collage is a hands-on workshop that includes critique, in-class exercises and weekly “homework” sessions. As workshop leader, I will guide participants in learning about the nature and history of collage making while providing the group with a variety of specific collage techniques, overall creative strategies, and examples of contemporary and modern collage work. Along the way, we will study the work of Kurt Schwitters, Man Ray, Hannah Hoch, Romare Bearden, Ray Johnson, and others. In addition, we will host local collage artists; and, by course’s end, each participant will have completed a large-scale collage that will be included in a group show at BookWorks.
Each student should bring a small treasure trove of potential collage materials, which could include: family photographs (or color copies); random papers and fabrics; old magazines and books; found objects; old posters and postcards; etc. It’s important that you interrogate your obsessions and try to create thematic underpinnings in your choices. Do not worry about being excessive or irrational.
The students should bring to class:
- glue sticks
- other preferred glues
- exacto knife
- cutting mat
- a collection of potential collage material
