Interlude Editions
Premieres 2008 Small-Book Limited Edition
Edition Containing the Work of 18 WNC-based Book Artists to be Raffled on September 26, 2008 at BookOpolis Event at Asheville BookWorks

Some of the best-known book, print, and paper artists in Western North Carolina (see participant list) have come together to create 17 books for the Interlude Editions 2008 Small Book Limited Edition. Interlude Editions will premiere this unique collection, then raffle it off on the evening of September 26 during BookOpolis, the major annual event of Asheville BookWorks. In addition, those attending the event will be able to bid for additional copies of individual books in a silent auction. Proceeds of the raffle and auction will benefit Interlude Editions, which funds residencies at Asheville BookWorks for artists wishing to create limited editions of artists’ books and fine arts prints for education, exhibition, and distribution.  Raffle tickets ($10 per ticket, or 3 tickets for $25) are available at BookWorks, 428 1/2 Haywood Road, West Asheville, or by calling 828.255.8444. All BookOpolis events, including the September 26 opening reception and raffle and silent auction, are free and open to the public.

Each of the books in the 2008 Small Book Limited Edition is handmade; collectively, the books incorporate a wide variety of printing and binding techniques, including letterpress, etching, screen-printing, linocut, woodcut, hand-cut rubber stamp, calligraphy, and digital printing. An array of book forms, both traditional and non-traditional are represented. The edition is housed in a one-of-a-kind handmade box with “movable rooms,” created by artist Sandy Webster. The theme for the edition was inspired by Gaston Bachelard’s treatise The Poetics of Space. Last year’s edition, the first introduced by Interlude Editions, is now in the collection of the Fine Art Museum at Western Carolina University.

Interlude Editions was established in 2007 to address the needs of artists working in the book form for space, equipment, creative resources, and dedicated time to create editions (multiple handcrafted copies) of their work. Artists who are selected through Interlude Editions’ competitive process conduct their residency at Asheville BookWorks, a community resource for print and book arts for Western North Carolina and the Southeast.  BookWorks provides studio space for the resident artists, as well as use of specialized equipment.

The 2007 Interlude Editions Resident Artist is Frank Brannon. Brannon is a letterpress artist, papermaker and the proprietor of Speak Easy Press. During his residency, he created an edition of more than 80 books featuring the work of Louis Lawrence (Larry Lou) Foster. Foster, a book artist and fine binder, is a respected expert and innovator in paste-paper design.
